A Conversation with Best Friend Supplies Co.

Shouldn't your furry best friend be as stylish as you? Well, Best Friend Supply Co is here to help make that a reality with their fabulous pet accessories!

We were lucky enough to get the chance to talk with Dani Larosse, the owner of Best Friend Supply Co. We spoke with Dani about the story of how her business came to be and also got a look at how she has been using custom rubber stamps to find success in her business!

Can you tell us a little bit about Best Friend Supplies Co.?

Best Friend Supplies Co (BFSC) is a pet accessory brand that specializes in bandanas, bows, collars, and leash sleeves. All of our products are handmade by me, Dani, in my little home studio in Massachusetts and have gone through extensive testing by my four-legged best friend, Luna. I also make matching accessories for humans so you and your furry companion can look great together.

Is there anything specific you'd like us to know about yourself or your business?

My background is in photography and art education but I've always been an avid crafter. I'm also a huge pet lover so this business is a great combination of all the things I enjoy. A lot of my inspiration comes from recognizing real-world needs and looking for ways to solve those problems. For example, there aren't a lot of accessory options for dogs that are really large or small so I made sure to include them in my sizes. Our smallest bandanas even fit cats!

I also try to advocate for proper dog training and look for ways to help owners and their dogs throughout the training process. One of our most popular products is our line of dog advocacy leash sleeves which help to inform others of your dog's particular situation. Some dogs need a little extra space and other dogs get nervous around strangers, so these leash sleeves let everyone know how to interact with you and your pup while you're out in public.

What inspired Best Friend Supplies Co?

Three years ago my boyfriend and I adopted our first puppy, Luna. As soon as we brought Luna home I decided to make her a bandana to wear while we were out on walks and, when the season changed, I made another bandana to keep up. From there I began experimenting with making bows to attach to her collar, and then making the collars themselves.

Since Luna looked so great and I loved the fabrics, I decided to make some matching face masks and scrunchies for myself. After a while, my friends started asking for accessories for themselves and their dogs, and finally, I decided to open an online shop and share my creations with the rest of the world.

We really love your logo for the stamp, what was your inspiration behind it?

The inspiration behind the BFSC logo is pretty simple – it's Luna! My boyfriend is a designer so when I decided to open a shop I asked him to come up with a logo. He sketched a bunch of different ideas but I instantly fell in love with the simplified illustration of our pup and I think it fits perfectly since she inspired the whole business.

The typeface was selected because it brings a casual and playful feel to the brand and the bone outline was added to bring the whole logo together and reinforce the pet-centric focus. Overall I couldn't be happier with the logo and I think it's a perfect representation of Best Friend Supplies Co.

How are you using your stamps?

We have a bunch of different stamps and we use them for all sorts of purposes. The logo stamps are definitely the most versatile; they're used on all of the bandana wraps, bow cards, boxes, and bags.

The size stamps are used exclusively on our bandana packaging for our retail displays and the website stamp gets placed on the back of most packaging. I love having different sizes and styles of stamps because we're not tied to any particular materials or printing procedures and we get to come up with new ideas and uses all the time.

How have our stamps helped you in branding and marketing?

We use our stamps for almost all of our physical branding and they really help to bring all of our product lines together. We also use them on our discount coupons that are included with each order and on our bags when we're out at markets.

Having stamps that can be used across all of our packaging and marketing materials really helps make the different products feel cohesive and helps the brand look more professional while still feeling handmade.

How do you prepare for the holidays?

The holiday season is always tough but it's also a ton of fun. Most of the products we offer come in holiday variants so there's a lot of work to be done finding new materials, making new bows and bandanas, and getting them all set up on the online store.

We also participate in a lot of markets this time of year so the weekends are packed. As for the logo, we do have a Christmas variant for the site with Luna wearing a Santa hat. Maybe this year the Santa Luna logo will make it onto the packaging as well!

Why did you decide to use a rubber stamp, as compared to another branding option?

The main reason I opted for stamps, as opposed to having our packing materials printed, is that I have complete control over the materials used. I try to be as eco-friendly as possible with all of my products, packaging, and processes, and using stamps lets me choose recyclable and compostable materials for most applications.

The other reason we chose stamps is for the cost. As a small business owner, I'm always looking for ways to save money, and investing in stamps has been significantly less expensive than repeatedly ordering custom printed materials.
