Growing a Brand With Modernly Planted
"The plant community has been such an inspiration for me. In addition to collecting plants, I started collecting unique pots and plant décor and had the idea of starting my own online shop as a side gig."
What Inspired You to Start Your Business?
Modernly Planted was born out of my desire to share unique pots and plant accessories with fellow plant lovers. In May 2019, I started my Instagram page @fancyplantschic dedicated to sharing photographs of my plants so that I did not inundate my non-plant loving friends with my nerdy plant photos on my personal account 😊 I quickly realized that the plant community was something that I never knew I needed, and I had no idea just how many others shared the same interest.
The plant community has been such an inspiration for me. In addition to collecting plants, I started collecting unique pots and plant décor and had the idea of starting my own online shop as a side gig. I started sourcing pots and plant accessories and opened my online shop in October 2020.
"(I) kept hitting a wall because so many vendors want you to order thousands of pots to even get started...I just couldn't do that."
After about six months into my business and after having a hard time finding products that I liked, I tried sourcing custom pots and kept hitting a wall because so many vendors want you to order thousands of pots to even get started. As a one woman show and no brick and mortar to store that large number of pots, I just couldn’t do that.
Eventually, I started researching different ways to make my own pots and came across hand-poured concrete pots. Working with concrete and turning it into a beautiful, unique piece of décor really intrigued me so I set out to learn everything I could about the process. I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with different techniques and colorways to handcraft my own custom pots. It’s been such a fun process and everything I create is truly one of a kind, which has been my goal from the beginning.
Where Do You Find Inspiration For Your Designs?
As cliché as it may sound, much of my inspiration comes from nature. Sunsets are my favorite, especially sunsets at the beach. There are so many beautiful color patterns in nature and I try to honor that in my work.
We Really Love Your Logo. What's Your Vision Behind it?
My stamp reflects my main logo which is simply my company name in a custom font that gives off a modern, boho aesthetic.
"I wanted something permanent with an organic feel... Plus stamps are super easy and quick to use."
Why Did You Decide to Use a Rubber Stamp Compared to Other Branding Options?
I wanted something permanent with an organic feel that would allow me to add my logo to my pieces. I work with concrete and every piece is handmade, so I like how the imperfections in stamping can complement the imperfections in my work. Plus stamps are super easy and quick to use.
How Have Stamps Helped With Your Business?
By stamping my logo on my handmade items, customers can always be reminded who they purchased their pieces from.
